Most kindness activities for upper primary and middle school get the same reaction: a sigh, an eye roll, and "do we have to?"
Another poster. Another worksheet about being nice.
And the students who need the message most are the first to tune out.
Kindness lands better when they have to work for it.
The Kindness Keeper is a printable World Kindness Day escape room that turns kindness into a mystery worth solving. Teams of 2–3 crack four challenges to find out who's been quietly making the school a kinder place, and show that person it mattered before the final bell.
WHAT IS THE KINDNESS KEEPER ESCAPE ROOM?
All year, someone has been leaving encouraging notes on lockers, returning lost jumpers and slipping a "you've got this" into textbooks before big tests. Nobody knows who. Then one last note appears: "Today is my last day here. I never knew if any of it made a difference. Did any of it matter?"
Your students have 45–60 minutes to find the Kindness Keeper and send back an answer.
Two levels come in one download, so you can pitch it right for your class:
👉 Grades 3–5 (ages 8–11): a pigpen cipher message, a 15-word kindness word search (across, down and diagonal), a logic grid, and an eight-word kindness scramble with optional hint cards
👉 Grades 6+ (ages 11+): a decode-and-unscramble challenge, a 17-word word search (any direction, even backwards), a logic grid and a kindness crossword
Teaching Grade 5? Pick whichever level suits your class.
WHAT'S INSIDE THE KINDNESS KEEPER ESCAPE ROOM:
👉 Mission Log: the mystery note that pulls them straight into the story
👉 4 task cards + answer sheets per level: each challenge builds to a code that unlocks the next one
👉 A self-checking Google Form for each level: students can't move on until the code is right, so nobody races ahead on a wrong answer
👉 Optional hint cards for the final task (Grades 3–5): hand them out for extra support, or leave them out for more of a challenge
👉 Teacher setup guide: how to print and run it, start to finish
👉 Answer keys for every task: run it completely tech-free if you'd rather
👉 Colour AND black & white versions of every page: print whichever your photocopier will let you
WHY TEACHERS WHO USE THIS DON'T GO BACK
- Kindness without the cringe: the message is built into the story, so nobody gets lectured
- No prep: print the pages, hand them out, done
- It runs itself: the form checks every code, so you're circulating, not marking
- Builds class community: teams of 2–3 have to listen, share the thinking and agree before they move on
- Fits anywhere: homeroom, advisory, pastoral care, or any class on World Kindness Day (13 November)
- Two levels in one: differentiate without planning a second lesson
The best bit comes at the end. Teams finally work out who the Keeper is, and their last code becomes the message they send back. The students who rolled their eyes at the start are suddenly invested in a stranger's thank you.
